Every now and then a game comes along that defies expectations. Snake Pass is just such a game. To call it shear brilliance is an understatement. Apparently the author was playing with rope physics in Unreal Engine when the concept for this game came to mind.
In terms of gameplay and artistic style it’s a fairly standard 3D Platformer that will put you in mind of N64 era games such as Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie. However, that is where the similarities end. The unique aspect of this game being the lively control of the titular snake. Indeed it’s the snake handling and snake physics that sets this game apart.
You goal sounds simple. Travel the obstacle course and collect the three gems required to open the level exit. Of course it wouldn’t be that simple and the level design is expertly built to play on the slithering, sliding and wrap around climbing of our legless reptile.
On the way, for extra points and completionist sake, there are also bubble and coins to be collected. The location of the coins in each level being particularly challenging in their placement.
The game is slit into four world of increased difficulty based on the traditional elements of earth, water, wind and fire. While the fire levels are the most challenging, the wind levels are the most interesting as you try and control a snake being blown off course by gales.
